Review of In a World... (2013) by Nenad L — 06 Feb 2014
"In a World" -- well, an industry -- ran by men, Carol (Lake Bell - It's Complicated) struggles to break into the tight-knit voice-over career niche of Hollywood in which her own father is an industry leader.
Her father, Sam (Fred Melamed - A Serious Man), appears to "champion" his daughter but he has no problems letting her know she is merely a woman and her talents most likely lie elsewhere. When a high-profile film quadrilogy (!) is on the lookout for the voice of their upcoming film trailers, Carol and her father are at odds with one another while they also compete with Sam's young protégé Gustav (Ken Marino - 'Burning Love') for the highly coveted job.
In a World also features a couple of side stories concerning the flailing marriage of Carol's sister and a small one of a young male friend who "likes likes" Carol. Written and directed by Bell (who is also obviously starring in this), the film is a rom-com very lite on the romance .
.. which is actually rather refreshing. Bell/Carol doesn't need the man to overcome here and give her life worth as Bell lives "In a World" in which she is perfectly capable. I liked this little film -- it is a perfectly capable first production by Bell.
