Review of In a World... (2013) by Phil H — 30 Mar 2014
American comic actress Lake Bell makes a triumphant leap into noteworthy writer-director status with this astute, sweet, sharp-eyed indie comedy built round the world of voice-over artists. Bell plays Carol Solomon, a voice coach living with and in the shadow of her father, the legendary Sam Sotto (actor and voice-over artist Fred Melamed).
She ends up competing against him and another rival for the voicing of an upcoming blockbuster trailer. The story is simple enough, but it is the characters, tone and craftsmanship that makes for a winning combination - breezy without being frivolous, funny without being forced and observant without being intrusive - with Bell the director and writer emerging as the true star of the picture.
In an age where forced fratboy humour seems to be the norm in American comedies, this is a welcome breath of fresh air from a comic talent that will hopefully shine brightly in the future.
