Review of In a World... (2013) by Vishal M — 12 Sep 2014
Sometimes I clap during movies and I clapped a few times in this. I suppose it has it's faults but I really liked the niche industry and the cast of comedians.
The beginning is almost like a really short documentary about voice-over work, especially in that it shows you the best: Don LaFontaine. So basically the movie is about a woman trying to break into the movie trailer voice over business. It's a great concept as great voices are used all around us and we probably don't even pay that much attention to them. But it's an industry just like anything else.
I thought Lake Bell was great in the lead role. Not the greatest voice, but she's a bit quirky and it goes well. As for rest of cast, really liked it: Notaro is quietly funny, Martin is always likable, Corddry is funny. A lot of these people have worked together on other shows or come from the same shows (Children's Hospital, Daily Show, etc).
So while it's a bit of a quirky flick, and maybe not meant to be taken too seriously, I thought the romantic stuff is great. There is a break-up of sorts and that scene absolutely kills because it's spot on. It's arguable if it belongs in the movie, but because it was so effective, I don't care. And there is another scene with Bell and Martin that works. Just the awkwardness of attraction and I thought they nailed it.
