Review of In a Lonely Place (1950) by Jacob O — 18 Jan 2011
Humphrey Bogart plays screenwriter Dixon Steele, a potentially violent man who is suspected of the murder of a young woman. He then falls in love with his neighbour, who gave an alibi proclaiming him as innocent.
"In A Lonely Place" is a superb and suspenseful film, full of rich characterisations. It's a true tour de force to watch the central character slowly begins to reveal his inner demons through random acts of violence.
Bogart plays the part well; normal enough at foresight, yet concealing an incredibly dangerous side of himself. An intense psychological film.
