Review of In a Lonely Place (1950) by Mikey M — 19 Jul 2011
"....that is unless you plan to arrest me for lack of emotion.".
Seminal Bogart performance that must rate pretty close to his best. Dix Steele is a screenwriter with a major chip on his shoulder and a temperament violent enough to make him the chief suspect in a young girl's murder. Through Steele's emotional journey, Bogart lays himself bare and gives a complex and layered performance and as an audience we are never quite sure if we ought to be rooting for him because his dangerous side is always so ominously close to the surface. The delicious Gloria Grahame plays foil here and the two form an unforgettable and doomed love that is so enhanced by sharp dialogue and a canny piece of directing. A smart film and I foresee repeated viewings.
