Review of In a Lonely Place (1950) by Padraig W — 31 Oct 2007
This is a fascinating film. Bogart gives a remarkably complex character study of a man locked inside his own anger. The resolution of the morality play is superb. Bogart is proven innocent, but it is a hollow empty outcome because it is achieved after his failings have lost him his one true chance of happiness.
If a good movie should reach a conclusion that "things would never be the same again", then this is the epitome of that. Nicholas Ray was the director of the 1950's. This is his best movie.
