Review of In a Better World (2010) by Ed B — 12 Sep 2011
3: A very interesting and thought-provoking picture, especially having seen it on the 10th Anniversary of 9/11 along with United 93 and Outside the Law. All three seem to be films with moral messages and geopolitical overtones.
I didn't find "In a Better World" to be worthy of a Best Foreign Language film Oscar, nor of its title though. The ending fell a little flat for me, when a more powerful conclusion could have pushed the film over the edge and made it something special, or at least moderately special.
As it stands the film is simply a skillful weaving of an African and Scandinavian story where either adults of children are being bullied and must figure out how to deal with it, either through violent or non-violent action.
The sets, locations, cinematography, casting, performances, etc are all top notch. This is the kind of production one expects from an Oscar winner, but when combined with the rather overt themes, it seemed a bit forced.
Don't get me wrong, it is an excellent film; but my praise is still rather restrained, for this rather contained and controlled picture.
