Review of In a Better World (2010) by Annick D — 05 Nov 2011
Winner of the 2011 Oscar for Foreign Language Film, In A Better World is a good film with moments of greatness, certainly more so than the other nominees I saw but less so than the cream of the crop from the year previous.
The thing I most appreciated was the complex characterization, especially for the two kids, which is a always a rare treat to see portrayed effectively. This and the acting really held the story together, which didn't always connect with itself strongly, plus the beautiful photography certainly helped.
And of course I'm always grateful for any film that makes you think about and reconsider life, and there's some unusual questions about revenge, innocence and violence posed here. I'll close with a quote from Ms.
Bier: "Our experiment in this film is about looking at how little it really takes before a child â" or an adult â" thinks something is deeply unjust. It really doesn't take much, and I find that profoundly interesting.
And scary.".
