Review of In a Better World (2010) by Justin S — 21 Oct 2013
In A Better World is a sprawling and thematically ambitious film, but ultimately, it is the actors in this multi-character story that carry the day. The screenplay takes the audience on a melodramatic roller-coaster, juxtaposing two broken families and a doctor working in a refugee camp in Sudan.
If that sounds like a weighty film, guess what? It is. But Susanne Bier cuts to the center of all the thorny issues by eliciting wonderful performances and creating a taut, palpable atmosphere of impending doom.
The film can be clunky in moments, but in the end, I was right there with the characters at the finish line.
