Review of In a Bedroom (2012) by Auggie — 07 Sep 2008
I put off watching this movie for a long time not because I wasn't interested in the storyline, but because of the anguish and emotional turmoil associated with it. The other day I finally got a chance to see what I'd missed out on.
I really have to say that the entire cast was a revelation. All the Oscar nods were very much deserved. Each actor portrayed flawed, fractured, and insecure characters so beautifully. While there were parts in which the movie moved a bit slowly, it was fascinating to watch the emotional tension build up to the famous dish-breaking explosion.
A horrid tragedy that no parent should have to go through, forces the paretns to dissect themsevles and second-guess their parenting skills. While there is no real happy ending, the vindication--regardless of its morality, is in some sense a bit of closure.
As a final note, listen to the explanation regarding the lobsters in the beginning. The analogy plays out brilliantly in the film (as you can tell from the title of the movie itself).
