Review of Impromptu (1991) by Emily H — 29 Jul 2009
Maye it's just not my kind of humor, but I wished they had whittled off most of the comedy parts. It was a bit too on the OTT side, with characters acting like they are in the middle of a ridiculous parody.
It would have allowed more screentime to developing the love story between Sand and Chopin. As it were, the chemistry between Judy Davis and Hugh Grant was electrifying, and the little moments we do get to glimpse in the Sand/Chopin romance were rather well done.
Not much needs to be said about the beauty of the soundtrack (hello, it's Chopin!). Added to that are the picturesque sets and the pretty costumes, which makes my period-heart happy. I only wished most of the acting didn't make me cringe all throughout (not the fault of the actors, though).
