Review of Imperium (2016) by K Nife C — 18 Aug 2016
Harry Potter and the lady from "The Sixth Sense" team up to fight America's fascist right. Set in a by-the-numbers FBI procedural infiltration template, this film explores a cavalcade of poignant, topical, national security and global history issues.
This film is smart enough to not place blame on any one agency or individual. By the first act, one gets the impression that the KKK and Nazis are scary. Luckily, the heavy-handed "fascism is bad" message abates by the time the plot picks up, and, coincidentally, the acting improves exponentially.
I'm going to call it now, Daniel Radcliffe is following in Jake Gyllenhaal's footsteps with shedding his adolescent preconceptions of a typecast for the prospect of a semi-method-based acting oeuvre.
While the thrills seem to be strictly based in the socio-political atmosphere of the subject matter, the most enjoyable aspect is seeing how human each character is. The film refuses to rely on lazy characterizations.
The only shortcomings that I would point out in the film are a mediocre cinematography (lacking in style), and the score was pretty bland. Also, as a frequent patron of dramatic conspiracy theory Youtube videos, there are a multitude of anti-Semitic sound-bytes ripe for the next Alex Jones rant.
