Review of Immortals (2011) by Jess S — 23 May 2012
IMMORTALS is a disappointment from before it was release. The film was marketed in line to capture fans of 300, but unless the original director [artist] that brought that movie to life was also involved in making Immortals, then this film was doomed to become an infuriating copycat.
Just like a benefactor who hires a present day artist to produce a cubist painting that replicates a particular piece of work, it will never be an authentic Picasso...no matter how much money is thrown at it. Likewise, Immortals is another war movie that was glossed over with a patina and was casted with pretty-boy models to play wannabe-soldiers. This movie greatly missed the mark of ever being able to truly be compared to Zack Snyder's 300. Snyder's signature style of film making is unique to him only. Anyone else trying to do the same, and fails to measure up or exceed his talent, will be easily made infamous. Immortals inevitably lacked the strength, power and artistry that was brought forth in 300. The only part that came close to representing a 300 style scene was the battle between the Gods and Titans.
Immortals was a fair movie in its own right (for the action-hungry viewer), but to mimic the stylistic artistry only unique to a particular director and to go so far as to compare it to 300 (by saying, "Immortals is from the same producers who brought you 300"), was a misleading and foolish marketing tactic to make sales. I would have enjoyed the movie best if it had been filmed without any correlation or marketing reference to 300, and if it had used a grey scaled gloss verses the patina to further make the movie stand on its own and individual right, rather than piggy back on the success that 300 brought to the screen.
