Review of Immortals (2011) by Ola G — 21 Sep 2012
After the Gods won their battle against the Titans, a new evil threatens Greece. Mad with power, King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke) has declared war against humanity. Amassing a bloodthirsty army of soldiers disfigured by his own hand, Hyperion has scorched Greece in search of the legendary Epirus Bow, a weapon of unimaginable power forged in the heavens by Ares. Only he who possesses this bow can unleash the Titans, who have been imprisoned deep within the walls of Mount Tartaros since the dawn of time and thirst for revenge. In the king's hands, the bow would rain destruction upon mankind and annihilate the Gods. But ancient law dictates the Gods must not intervene in man's conflict. They remain powerless to stop Hyperion...until a peasant named Theseus (Henry Cavill) comes forth as their only hope. Secretly chosen by Zeus, Theseus must save his people from Hyperion and his hordes...
Tarsem Singh is amongst directors such as Gaspar Noe with an entirely unique way of making movies. I loved Singhs "The Cell" and "The Fall". Beautifully contructed movies with visuals no other have created before. Thus, I was excited to see "Immortals", but I was a bit insecure after having seen the trailer. I reckon "Immortals" is Singhs weakest movie so far. The visuals are stunning as usual and Singhs take on the story of Theseus is good, but I reckon Singh fails in really intriguing me like he did with "The Cell" and "The Fall". I reckon one of the things that makes "Immortals" less intriguing is the cast, the dynamics of the movie and partly the acting. But, I did enjoy the presence of the stunning Freida Pinto. I hope Tarsem Singh will dazzle me a bit better the next time.
