Review of Immortal Beloved (1994) by Zarinah H — 10 May 2009
Beautiful and poignant portrayal of the triumphs and trials of Ludwig Van Beethoven. Gary Oldman delivers the performance of his career [well, I kind of loved his romantic portrayal of Count Dracula too] as the tortured composer.
On his deathbed, Beethoven [Oldman] declares in writing that his "Immortal Beloved" is to be his heir. His close friend Anton Schindler [Jeroen Krabbe] undertakes the mission to find out the identity of this mysterious Immortal Beloved.
Viewers are taken back in time via flashback where Beethoven's life story unfolds. Watching this story, one can't help but sympathize and share in Beethoven's pain as he goes through life, encountering disappointments and misery in both his professional and personal life, most notably the loss of his hearing.
A stirring human drama that provides valuable insight into the life of a most remarkable man.
