Review of Imitation of Life (1959) by Tibor B — 04 Dec 2007
Grade A stuff from the emigre king of 50s melodrama, douglas Sirk. This contains just about every good soap opera conflict / storyline (excluding the supernatural realm) before inflicting quite a sour and cynical punch to the audience in it's second half.
Don't be fooled by the cosy 50s setting and technicolour sheen. This is a world in which a mother dies of heartache after all. Wonderful cast and a truly pioneering performance by Juanita Moore.
