Review of Imagine Me & You (2006) by Tasha W — 24 Mar 2008
Boy meets girl, boy gets girl, girl meets girl, girl leaves boy, girl gets girl...in a nutshell.
Entertaining, yet fairly typical, romantic comedy fare starring Piper Perabo as a newlywed who begins to question her sexuality after a brief encounter with her wedding's florist, played by Lena Headey, better known to some of you (*cough*Neo) as Queen Gorgo of 300. You don't have to be Roger Ebert to see where this is headed: after the initial setup, it's basically 70 minutes of Perabo's character battling with her emotions, with a dash of comic relief here and there from the supporting characters. Thankfully, it's a British rom-com, so the humour was a bit of an added bonus, particularly the witty banter of her husband's amorous, yet charming, best man. She inevitably leaves her husband and there's the ubiquitous final 'showdown' type scene where she has to win back her one true love and they run and embrace in the middle of the street (airport, concert hall, and so on) after she does some sickeningly sweet thing that references something from earlier in the movie. I have to restrain my inner cynic, who points out to me how ludicrous it is that a previously 100% straight (til now) woman would just up and leave her dashing, charming, successful 'best friend' of a British husband for another woman simply because they caught eyes from across the room. But, that's the movies for you, selling you the idea that love is this independent entity that floats around lassoing perfect strangers together once in a while. All being said, not a bad watch for a Saturday afternoon when you're broke and just spent your quota for the day gorging on pancakes and spinach mushroom omelettes at IHOP.
