Review of I'm Still Here (2010) by John M — 10 Dec 2010
Joaquin Phoenix tells you his bullshit problems for 100 minutes. This is the MOCKumentary of Joaquin "J.P." Phoenix throwing in the towel on his acting career and pursuing his dreams of being a rapper.
.. yeah. Even before it was released, it was widely suspected that this was a hoax. I mean come on, that David Letterman interview, there's NO way that he didn't know exactly what he was doing.
This is all one big public publicity stunt, and it actually gets pretty annoying. All it is is Joaquin, looking like Zach Galifianakis, walking around, bitching and complaining about his life. It might work if you didn't know that it is all a scam, but even if that information weren't so widely available, you'd probably still have difficulty buying into it.
I mean really, sure there are people with mental deficiencies out there, but he is being such a big baby and such an ass to all of his friends, there is no way somebody wouldn't have pulled him off to the side and slapped him silly for his behavior, never mind for his sucky hip-hop (and it SUCKS).
And when Joaquin is talking, he's either mumbling incoherently or not making any sense; it's like that line in The Social Network, "As if every thought that tumbles through your head was so clever it would be a crime for it not to be shared.
" I get that it's an experiment, but it feels like one big desperate cry for attention, and being that it's all fake, this movie ends up being more of a waste of time than anything.
