Review of I'm Still Here (2010) by Sarah C — 21 May 2011
It's really hard to know what to say about this film, which I'd long anticipated seeing. It's nowhere near as funny as I'd hoped it would be, and it gets harder and harder to watch as Joaquin's bead grows. At one point I just wished I could reach inside the screen and shave off both beard and matching hair, which I think came fully equipped as a luxury home for small rodents.
On a certain level, I think it was a pretty brave move, attempting to stay in character for a year, or however long it was. Even though the fact it was a hoax had clearly been leaked, probably as part of the film - maybe as a damage limitation, face-saving manouevre? But ultimately I don't really know what the point of the whole movie was. The most obvious answer is that it was a satire on celebrity. Only I'm not exactly sure which aspects it was poking fun at. If one could call any of it fun.
If I say the most entertaining highlight of the whole movie is someone taking a dump on Joaquin's face while he's asleep, this pretty much tells you all you need to know. I'll be interested to see where he goes from here, as it feels like his joke has massively backfired.
