Review of I'm Still Here (2010) by Julien C — 24 May 2011
In 2008 it was reported that Joaquin Phoenix was having a very public meltdown, Announcing he was quitting acting to pursue a career as a Hip Hop artist with the backing of P Diddy, Daddy whatever he calls himself as his management.
Director and Brother-In-Law Casey Affleck follows Joaquin in this docu/mockumentary through his tough mental journey to reinvent himself. Supposedly disillusioned with acting, we follow ever step of the spiralling downfall of this man.
What unfolds on screen is a man that has really let himself go. He seems bloated, one would go as far as to say if he wasn't a man his stomach looks very much like he is pregnant. Not only that he also seems to be constantly on some kind of narcotics totally losing the plot. We see explicit cuts of snorting cocaine to sexual antics with hookers.
Was it real or wasn't it? It's clear to see that it has hoax written all over it, Could Affleck and Phoenix really be sending up the celebrity lifestyle of the rich and famous? Hell yeah!
Whatever your views on this piece, it's highly entertaining, extremely watch-able and has many "you can not be serious" laugh out loud moments.
