Review of I'm Still Here (2010) by Mads D — 13 Jun 2011
Now that we all know it's a hoax, it's a little uncertain how to take this film. It's easy to say in hindsight that some of the scenes appear far too obviously scripted, but even without it the prospect of a mid-30s Hollywood actor who has it all calling it quits to be a rapper seems rather far-fetched.
That aside, Phoenix shows a lot of commitment to the "role",and there's interesting points made about the nature of celebrity, particularly in the Internet age. The "revenge" sequence is painful but memorable, but not as unsettling as how awful Phoenix's rapping is.
Sean Combs' facial expressions are great- he's probably not a good enough actor to pull them off, so it's likely he wasn't in on it. Worth a look but not quite the mockumentary masterpiece it's aiming to be really.
