Review of I'm Still Here (2010) by Mike M — 11 Sep 2013
An enjoyable wind-up or in-joke, offering - more so than any "SNL" host gig - a transition into comic roles for a performer hitherto known for the gravity of his dramatic work; this, finally, is where any transgressive shock in "I'm Still Here" resides.
Affleck finishes on a false note, with JP making a visit to his father's home in Panama, an instance of sentiment of special pleading to which [Sacha] Baron Cohen wouldn't dare to stoop, hinting as it does there might be a real human being beneath the character's surface excess; in fact, finding out an actor is only *playing* at being a coke-snorting, hooker-screwing a**hole is somehow far more reassuring than any appointment with the real thing.
