Review of I'm So Excited! (2013) by Héliø L — 23 Sep 2013
Almodovar returns to his anarchic farces of his earlier work, but this unfortunately lacks the aggressive punkish chaotic energy that made those early shock films so enjoyable. Or perhaps as an audience, it takes a lot more to shock us than before.
Perhaps he's not melodramatic enough in this film, and is merely silly, but it's still quite entertaining, with all the actors working hard. Unexpectedly, some of the subplots have an emotional depth that, if it belonged to another, much more serious film, would have been riveting.
But say what you want - to me, a bad Almodovar is better than no Almodovar, and I enjoy the melodramatic contrivance which is his signature.
