Review of I'm Not There (2007) by Kellie G — 02 Feb 2009
I liken Todd Hayne's direction to Michel Gondry's style, and for this reason I could appeciate the interwoven realities and surrealities. This movie was visually stunning and I wish I had seen it on the big screen (but I was too lazy).
For me, the different actors represented the many faces of Bob Dylan (musician (admired by others), roots in blackness, actor and playboy, philosopher, drug taker, hermit), and not being a fanatic, I'm sure there are many nuances that I missed (if you're not a BD fan, I don't think you could appreciate it in the least).
I particularly enjoyed Catt Blanchett's 'Jude'.. after a while you really think your experiencing Bob Dylan, her accent is almost perfect. I enjoyed Charlotte Gainsbourg (connection to Michel Gondry - Science of Sleep), her silences spoke volumes.
Don't expect the film to make sense, unless you really know Bob Dylan (a contradiction in itself).
