Review of I'm Not There (2007) by Julie F — 02 Feb 2009
Obviously, many filmakers strive (and succeed) to show the many sides of their protaganist. Todd Haynes' use of 6 completely diverse actors to recreate different phases (myths) of Bob Dylan's life is brilliantly successful.
Before the movie came out, the visuals of Cate Blanchett were striking, making the project intriguing because Heath Ledger, Christian Bale, Richard Gere and Marcus Carl Franklin bear no resemblance what so ever to Bob Dylan.
Ben Wishaw was close (and is getting that 60's rocker thing down after his performance as Kieth Richards in "Stoned"). I found short feature on the DVD that offers a brief introduction of each of the characters to be helpful.
Here is the catch. Not being acutely aware of Dylan's life story, I did not necessarily walk away with any more of a sense of him. I was impressed with all of the performances (and particularly touched by Heath Ledger's) but did not necessarily "get it".
Then I listened to the commentary. Haynes gives GREAT commentary. I do not know how Dylan enthusiasts (purists) responded to Haynes' vision / portrayal, but I walked away with an even greater appreciation - the same way that you absorb the enthusiasm of a good friend about something that they are truly passionate.
