Review of I'm Not There (2007) by Nikolai E — 21 Feb 2009
The most thoroughly schizophrenic movie I've ever seen. You want to talk schizophrenic? Tell me how it took eight separate production companies to make this thing. It's more coherent than it really had any right to be, I suppose The various characters' stories are neither presented sequentially nor intercut together, more like a waxing and waning mix of the two editing schemes that I thought worked relatively well.
The biggest problem, or biggest success depending on how you look at it, is that you can identify the best scenes immediately because they all seem to feature Cate Blanchett. Her performance towers above most of the others (although Marcus Carl Franklin does wonders with what little he's given) but the writing and storytelling in her segments also seem a cut above the rest.
That means I greatly enjoyed her part of the film but also resented the rest for not living up to it. That might just go to show if you throw enough darts, you're going to hit the bullseye.
