Review of I'm Not There (2007) by Andrae A — 13 Mar 2009
I know this film is supposed to be like a living, breathing Bob Dylan song, concepts alluded to never quite defined, interweaving realities punctuated in romanticism and fantasy but it was just way too.
..self indulgent. I never see Bob's music or the man like that. His attitude is less of indulgence but the want to create without it being defined or heralded just to exist...beauty like star to be observed not to be lassoed and pulled to earth.
With them continually using song titles as dialogue with a wink to the camera it just turned into what some see Bob's music as- a Rorschach of sounds and imagery, like a musical Jackson Pollack unleashing enough randomness till it eventually strikes a chord with someone, the right someone, who tells everyone else it's art.
With Christian Bale giving a linearly intense performance, Heath Ledger being mediocre as usual, and Cate Blanchett getting lost in method, Ben Winshaw shone a little in a delicate portrayl. But the kid.
..Marcus Carl Franklin was nothing short of amazing. Like...seriously...amazing. Richard Gere wasn't bad... I really liked the idea of Riddle town- that was very nice.
