Review of I'm Not There (2007) by Rock J — 27 Apr 2009
I'm a huge Bob Dylan fan, beleving him to be one of the greatest poet/songwriters of all time. I'm Not There is a film that uses different actors as characters that reflect different aspects of Dylan's career, such as Christian Bale playing early protest songs and Cate Blanchett struggleing with drug addiction (don't be put off by Blanchett because she's a woman, she pulls off her character better than anyone else).
Also, any movie with Heath Ledger in it is a must see for me, and he's very good here as always. However, even though I enjoyed this film and how it's a hybrid-like autobiography, I felt problems with it.
I've never been a Richard Gere fan, so that doesn't help it. But even though I respect Todd Haynes for his vision, I felt that the film's style didn't work completely. It's hard to place exactly, but I couldn't get into each character, instead waiting for certain ones to be on screen.
However, even though it has faults, I'm Not There is a very entertaining film with a fantastic cast. But in a funny way, I think I would have liked a regular Dylan biofilm better, maybe with just Christian Bale.
He pulled off the young Dylan very well.
