Review of I'm Not There (2007) by Chris V — 07 May 2009
I kinda like Bob Dylan a little bit less after watching this...just a quick run-thru of the cast: Marcus Franklin, thumbs up. Ben Whishaw, two thumbs up. Christian Bale, neutral, coulda been better, didnt seem to have enough screen time.
Heath Ledger, decent, slightly above neutral. Richard Gere was good. Cate Blanchett was two thumbs down. She was the one who played the most recognizable "Dylan", and therefore got the most screen time.
..but she was the one I couldnt stand...because it seemed like she was doing an impersation more than any other actor...i mean, its difficult in the first place because she's a woman, but even if you stepped back and just watched the character, it didnt feel right with the rest of the movie.
..Charlotte Gainsbourg was really great tho. as far as the whole movie, with the multi-layered story, different actors, non-linear narrative; while I was watching it, I didnt like it...after the fact, i've started to appreciate it.
..not necessarily LIKE it, but appreciate it...it was a totally unique way to approach a "biopic", so I give credit to Todd Haynes and everyone for it...but I still cant give it more than 3 stars.
