Review of I'm Not There (2007) by Ricky G — 11 Jul 2009
Some excellent performance, some incredible and hypnotic cinematography, but an overall esoteric film that leaves everyone but Dylan scholars in absolute confusion. I forced myself to watch the whole movie, thinking that things would perhaps tie together, but this was like reading random excerpts of ten different literary theory scholars, without context, without intros or conclusions, without even the thesis statements.
It's a maddeningly frustrating viewing experience, even though I do appreciate the performances and the overall look and feel of the film. Listen: I don't hate difficulty in films, only inaccessibility.
I'm fine with putting in effort...but if the film is impossible...why bother?
