Review of I'm Not There (2007) by Mary C — 10 Aug 2009
An enigmatic film about the life of Bob Dylan that is actually 7-8 different stories played by different actors. The film can be very confusing at times, because of the widely diverse characters playing different aspects of the singer's life and psyche.
The payoff is the sparkling and provocative poetry throughout the film. There's a lot to digest and discuss and it's worth at least a second viewing.
One of the points the film makes with its wild and wooly ride through one man's life is that we "all change. I'm a different person from the person that got up this morning." In Dylan's life it is easier to see --as he goes from spokesman for a generation, to jaded rock star, to evangelical preacher to outlaw iconoclast. But Dylan is more than a figurehead for a generation--his story reflects the human condition as we learn, change grow--and sometimes crash our motorbikes--figuratively or literally.
If there's any central theme to the movie, it's hiding. All of the characters in the various stories are hiding from something, someone, andperhaps most of all, themselves.
