Review of I'm Not There (2007) by Vic R — 05 Jan 2010
Like Haynes previous bio-pics, the fictional glam-rock Velvet Goldmine and the all-Barbie-Doll version of Karen Carpenter's battle with anorexia, Superstar, I'm Not There is less interested in revealing the person behind the persona than in wallowing in it.
Casting 6 different actors to portray different facets of this celebrity does little to humanize him but this film's very existence speaks to the reality that a celebrity's life becomes ours, as observers and fans, once someone achieves a certain level of notoriety for better or worse.
We see what we want to in them, whether hero or devil. Overall, this is a taxing experience but an often stunning technical achievement. Die hard fans will have fun connecting real life events to the fictional ones portrayed in this film.
For those hoping to familiarize themselves with the man Scorsese's excellent No Direction Home is the place to begin, not here.
