The Beatles had "Across the Universe" and Bob Dylan has "I'm not there", which means that to understand the music of both and in "I'm not there" you aslo have to have a concise knowledge of Robert Zimmerman's illustrious and changing career.

As for the movie itself, it's a bit of a mess: it jumps back and forth once too many to get a clear handle on what's going on at first; but eventually, you'll either get a handle on how these multitude of singers come together to represent Bob Dylan or you won't.

The movie's clearest strength is in its' cast, which all make great strides to represent the different aspects and personalities of the famous folk singer. My favorite had to be Cate Blanchett as Jude Quinn, representing the 1960's Era Dylan and is obviously great fun with the performance.
