Review of I'm Here (2010) by Will T — 07 Nov 2010
From the beginning scene of Shel, the robot, Jonze has captured your attention with "I'm Here". The story is quite simple, but intriguing. It's a love story between boy and girl, except they're robots.
It's only 30 minutes long, yet I cried... twice.
But this movie will simply have that effect on you. And it seems in such a short time, Jonze has to take care of all the small details, making them memorable and likeable.
The first thing to have such a strong impact is Andrew Garfield's voicing of Sheldon: it's a quiet and reserved voice that evokes sympathy, not for any particular logical reason but because it just sounds so timid and desperately human.
In conjunction with this is the robots themselves. they're just cute, to put it shortly. Sheldon has an awkward boxy head that you can't help but like.
It's these small touches that will make the movie so memorable. But the script is also quite touching (though not completely original): Shel finds love, in the midst of a very boring and formulated life, and finds his true value because of it.
The robot concept is an interesting thought and it adds a bit of intellectual spin for the movie, but it's a perfectly viable love story even without it.
