Review of I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK (2006) by Philippe S — 02 Jan 2008
This movie is about a woman who is put in a psychiatric hospital after an accident ; she thinks she's a cyborg meant to destroy doctors. Through her vision, her mind's borders slowly appear to us. Reality is the first one, from which she takes elements to comfort her idea, talking to neon lamps who are like her. A set of rules she has to obey to are eventually recalled when she's behaving too close to her feelings ; these rules could in fact easily be applied to an ordinary worker's life.
Of course, she also interacts with other patients. Roles between patients and nurses are shifted a few times indeed. Some links that transcend reality appear between characters. Expression of their minds has no physical limit, and leads to situations that can be funny, or simply beautiful. There are many references to childhood.
The whole thing starts chaotically, but appears to be very coherent, structured and organized at last. It is very surprising and refreshing, bringing us something new and unseen before.
