Review of I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK (2006) by Dave J — 15 Jul 2008
It's almost as good as its title. The visual imagination at work here is quite wonderful; at times it's reminiscent of a much darker Amelie. The performances are often delightful; the would-be Terminator around whom the film revolves is somehow charming even after we've been shown the contents of her imagination in VERY gory detail.
I laughed, but at the same time I felt a little uneasy about being entertained by the wacky antics of a group of mental patients; isn't that what used to happen at Bedlam Hospital? That said, the comically eccentric characters are treated sympathetically, and a scene redolent of Chaplin's Modern Times at the start suggests that working life could be enough to drive anyone loopy. Others have disagreed, but personally I really liked the ending, which seemed to me to explain much of what had gone before and bring things to a genuinely heart-warming conclusion.
