Review of I'll See You in My Dreams (2015) by Maxime Z — 06 Jun 2015
I had high hopes for "See You In My Dreams" based on the cast, thoughtful content, and trailer, but this movie fails to deliver. Sam Elliott and Mary Kay Place are two of my favorite actors, bringing a sensitive undercurrent to the empty shell of a script - such a waste that they had nothing to work with in the way of dialogue and character development.
Rhea Pearlman brought the only zing and pep in a plodding, cliché of a story about a woman who shut her life down for the past 20 years following the death of her husband. Blythe Danner, who has always been overrated, put her all into playing Carol Peterson, a tight-lipped woman who is internalized and numb.
In combination with a script that fails to ever go anywhere near deep, her character is a shell we can't feel and can barely care about. She lost me when in her fairly empty life she can't seem to make the effort to welcome her daughter or inquire about her life.
A scene that brings a couple of welcome laughs, when the girlfriends get stoned together, is ruined by the implausible threat of a bust by a police officer as they walk their shopping cart back to the retirement home.
This is a dreary waste of time.
