Review of Il Divo (2008) by Trevor W — 01 Oct 2009
Servillo is stunning as the irrepressible Machiavelli-like Andreotti in this truly gripping account of the turbulent times in Italian politics during the 70's and 80's. The abducted Aldo Morro proves an unwitting narrator to this complex tale of intrigue, deceit and ambition.
Even for a non-Italian speaking simpleton like me this has proven to be one of the stand out films of the year. Reservoir Dogs meets Gomorrah. As a consequence I went straight out and bought Tobias Jones' The Dark Heart of Italy; whilst no doubt over simplifying Italy and it's post war political landscape it puts a lot of things in context and made me appreciate this fine film even more.
