Review of Ikiru (1952) by Qaiser S — 22 Apr 2008
A Kirosawa film I picked up from somebody's journal, the usual samurai epic is replaced by a heartfelt drama about a "living dead" civil servant who begins to explore life after he finds out he has terminal stomach cancer.
While it moves along the lines that you might expect having seen many dramas like this over the years, with the theme "appreciate and live your life to the fullest because you don't know when it will end", it gains credit for being serious with being maudlin, humourous without being silly, and featuring a third act at which time the main character's life is reviewed by his peers at his wake.
Very nicely done, but not the sort of fare one would need to view more than once.
