Review of Ikiru (1952) by Dave A — 30 Jun 2008
Not all Kurosawa's films were samurai epics, and this one from 1952 is about an aging bureaucrat - played by the brilliant Takashi Shimura, who discovers he has only a year to live and decides to do something worthwhile with his remaining time. The film is both a satire on bureaucratic inertia, and a touching portrait of a determined, but frail old man.
Takashi Shimura's acting is truely sublime; subtle but immensely powerful. Hard to believe this is the same man who was to play the leader of the Seven Samurai in Kurosawa's next film...
