Review of Igby Goes Down (2002) by Lorna R — 14 Aug 2007
It's pretty pathetic actually. I only rented this worthless movie for the sake of Danes, who is the most underrated actress of modern times. In fact, had it not been for the pollution of Culkin, Goldlum, Amanda Peet and Bill Pullman, this would have been an alright movie.
I don't hate the "independent" genre, but when material is relatively weak, there is little to marvel at. A film is made for 5 million dollars, big deal. If your director is worthless and the cast is inferior, does every independent film need 5 stars?
I really love Claire Danes, and she is fantastic for the role. In fact, she dominates the scenes from Culkin and Phillippe, but their mere presence is almost enough to overshadow Danes's brilliance.
I disliked most of this film, and really most of the actors as well. Pathetic on all accounts with the exception of Danes.
