Review of If Only (2004) by Lisa Michelle A — 28 Jan 2012
I love this film. It's so sad and I cry all the way through, I just can't help it. Ian gets the chance to go back and spend his girlfriend Samantha's last day with her, but of course right from the start you know that when he gets that chance it's not going to end up the way it did, with Sam's death.
He does everything he can to make her last day on earth special, without telling her why, so he doesn't scare her, and it's all so heartbreakingly sad, as not only until he realises that he's going to lose her forever, does he realize how much he loves her and doesn't want to lose her.
The ending of the film when Ian dies instead of Sam is truly heartrenchingly sad to watch, and really tugs at the heartstrings. How anyone can not cry at that scene I don't know. The first time I saw this film I was crying my heart out at the very end, screaming "NO"! It's a great film nonetheless but just really sad to watch.
You'd think the more times you see it you wouldn't cry as much but I always do, more even, as it just gets sadder and sadder the more I see it.
