Review of If I Stay (2014) by Taryn F — 10 Sep 2014
I saw this because there's nothing worth seeing in theaters I haven't already seen and because Chloe Moretz is pretty great in everything. I was hoping for something along the lines of this Summer's YA tearjerker "The Fault in Our Stars.
" What I got was a sappy, mind-numbing, pointless bore of a movie that fails on almost every level and seemed to go on forever. I rolled my eyes and sighed throughout. Even the little swells of emotion that came from some of the more heartbreaking scenes weren't given enough room to have any lasting impact.
Other than Moretz, the characters were entirely one-note and flat. And the dialogue was mostly cringe-worthy and sometimes comically bad. I really hope the book did a better job at telling this story.
