Review of If I Stay (2014) by Sv G — 09 Apr 2015
Mediocre film that feels more like a made of TV movie, but with Chloe Moretz in it, it became a theatrical release. The film is basically just a drama about a girl, her love story with a boy, her love of the cello, and her struggle to fit in within a perfectly loving family, but one who is very different from her. But in order to make the film feel a little different, an unexplained out of body experience runs through the whole film, filled with a very vague set of rules. The film decides to steer clear of any specific religious idea, instead just creating a generic white cloud or bright light.
Moretz is solid in the lead, but its well below her best work. She seems better suited to roles of strange characters (such as vampires, girls with telekinesis, or as a 12 year old swearing action star).
Some of the older cast are good, especially Stacy Keach as the grand father. The writing is underwhelming and what could have been a far more emotional movie, ends up feeling fairly flat most of the run time.
