Review of If I Stay (2014) by Diogo C — 21 Jun 2015
I believe some people failed to understand that behind the girly teen dream, filled with fantasies about love, there's a massive and powerful introspection about the meaning of life in Mia's perspective.
The bulk of this movie wasn't the phenomenon of her being able to percept things outside her dying body while deciding if she should stay or not. I wasn't even interested in knowing if she was going to stay.
What moved me throughout this whole film was the memories she hanged on to, the way she defined what happiness was to her and how life was meaningless now that that happiness could no longer be relived.
Some people also failed to understand that she decided to stay because she was given the chance to honor and preserve her parents memory by going to Julliard, after all the sacrifices they made to help her live her passion for the cello - she had to keep playing for them.
Unlike most critics' reviews, who's perspective might seem solely pragmatical and ludicrously reductive, I believe we were presented with a loving soul who reminded me how to rise from a lost battle to win the war.
