I think the book handled the flashback part better, I think the movie had to sacrifice her scenes with her family for the scenes with her boyfriend, which kind of lessened the impact of her family's deaths.

but I'm glad they kept in the small subplot with her grandfather, that scene was heartbreaking. the ending was too rushed, but it was ok. And it wasnt' as manipulative as Fault in our Stars, let's get a little perspective here, people.
