Review of If Beale Street Could Talk (2018) by David G — 19 Jan 2019
This is a beautiful and powerful film balancing subtle intimate moments with social commentary.  The film is marred by a screenplay that is often simplistic and flat. Too many times the dialogue devolves into âIâ(TM)ll never you go,â? a glaring problem next to the narration taken from Baldwinâ~s prose.
I found a review on Goodreads summarizing  how I felt: âJenkinâ(TM)s adaptation â¦Â is an incredibly striking film that is visually impeccable in a way that seems so intentional itâ(TM)s almost heavy-handed and too controlled.
That said, itâ(TM)s a beautiful and devastating movie that appropriately (& tenderly) elevates the themes of black love (romantic and familial) found in the book, and juxtaposes it with the despair of Fonnyâ(TM)s unjust incarceration.
â? Ifeyinwa.  I still highly recommend the film because it is so well shot and the acting so subtle, and the source material is so strong.
