Review of If Beale Street Could Talk (2018) by Carrie C — 06 Jan 2019
This movie was marketed as a romance. "Get ready to fall in love", it said. It's more of a historical drama with some young love sprinkled in. The plot is okay, but drags almost throughout the entire movie.
The writers had an opportunity to further develop the characters playing Fonny's family, but don't. They have one scene and are never shown again. The acting is well executed, but the plot leaves a lot of gaps.
I wish it had lived up to the accolades it was given, but not for me.
