Review of if.... (1968) by Alistair N — 28 Jan 2008
This film is a surrealistic masterpiece that succeeds in being an angry (and timeless) allegory for the oppression of society. Dipping from colour to black and white, from humour to anger until its final bizarre (but fitting) shoot out, this is an endlessly challening, puzzling and engrossing film that is ripe and open for intepretation.
Anderson's direction is immaculate and as for McDowell - with and arrogant, enraged swagger, filled with contempt for the emptiness of those above him, has any actor made a more striking film debut since?
