Review of if.... (1968) by Adam B — 17 Mar 2008
Another brilliant film from Lindsay Anderson. Whether or not public school was like this or not, Anderson excellently portrays the British upper class as buillish masochists, intent on causing pain through 'discipline' One scene inparticular, where McDowell is being whipped and then has to thank the head boy who was beating him.
I think Arthur Lowe and the always excellent Graham Crowden could have been better used, Their time would come whowever in Anderson's later work -like Brittania Hospital.
Remininscent in tone to The Ruling Class - another long forgotten British Cinema gem.
